Proper Italian Outside of Little Italy

4126 Sainte-Catherine RUE O, Westmount, QC

Good Italian food in Montreal is found in a very concentrated area of the city between Jean Talon & St. Zotique – also known as Little Italy. I rarely venture outside of that sector if I’m seeking traditional Italian food, but that all changed this week.

I debated whether it was too early for me to try out Gentile’s new location in Westmount for dinner, but figured they’ve had 57 years to perfect their food. That’s right. Their original location in what was once Montreal’s fashion-district, Chabanel, has been opened since 1959 and is still thriving. At lunchtime their are lineups to pick-up one of their famed sandwiches and a cappuccino to-go. Their latest location is slightly different, however, offering the same amazing coffee, breakfast, and lunch, but now also dinner. Not to mention, the décor is beautiful featuring mosaic tiled floors, leather benches, marble table-tops, and the most adorable finishing touch – nonna’s floral couch (literally! It’s been preserved in plastic and is used as seating!).

Each dish was better than the next, so I’m not going to sit here describing them to you – go taste for yourself! My personal favourites: the bruschetta, meatballs, grilled octopus, and gnocchi. Check out everything we tasted below!

I’ve already been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and will be back again and again – one, because of its proximity to my neighbourhood and two, because it’s just so damn good. I’m not of Italian descent, and don’t have a Nonna to cook me homemade Italian meals, but I’m ok with it because now…I have Gentile.
