A Turkish Delight

234 avenue Laurier Ouest Montreal, Quebec H2T 2N8

How often is it that you visit the same restaurant for brunch a few days after you dined there for dinner? Usually I like it when a restaurant sticks to their strength, but I am all for it if said restaurant could deliver in both spheres.

When I visited Barbounya on a rainy weeknight it was quiet in contrast to their busy Sunday brunch. This could explain why service was a lot slower during my latter visit. Luckily, the food, coffee, and warm service compensated for the wait.

The space also felt different with each visit. The dimly lit room with an interesting layout felt romantic and trendy at night, while during the light of day the warmth of the wooden tables and aroma of coffee created a cozier feel.

Born in Izmir, Turkey, Chef Fiscun Ercan was brought up cooking with her mother and grandmother. Her love for her national cuisine shines through (during both brunch and dinner) as she brings a modern North American touch to traditional dishes. At brunch get a feel for Turkish dining with a shared platter of jams, spreads, olives, and salad that arrives before the brunch itself, while dinner items are Mézés (equivalent to Spanish tapas) meant for sharing. No matter the time of day, it is obvious that sharing food and eating together are prevalent in Turkish culture-  ideas that are no stranger to me being of Iraqi/Jewish descent, where meals also focus on shared dips and small plates. The meals were comforting and familiar making them that more enjoyable.
