New Kid on the Block
5779 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal
NDG is blooming into a really popular neighbourhood as restaurants and cafés are slowly sprouting up around the area. The latest restaurant and wine bar to grace NDG residents with its presence is Pizzeria Melrose. Located on Melrose and Sherbrooke O, this spot is sure to become a favourite with locals and pizza/wine lovers alike.
Unlike neighbouring restaurants, Melrose offers atmosphere. It was actually once a reupholstery shop that has been transformed into a charming pizzeria. You may find it difficult to spot as the upholstery sign remains and there is no flashy Melrose sign up. It is the type of place you try because your friend recommended it; therefore, no sign needed.
The menu is simple (as menus should be). Start with a Serrano platter, sliced right before your eyes. Appetizers include light salads with fresh ingredients, which is good because you cannot pass up on their pizza. Each pizza sounded better than the next. We went with the Melrose (topped with tomatoes, mozzarella, and veal meatballs). Surprisingly, the meatballs, which could stand on their own, did not make the pizza soggy in the center. My dinner date (my dad) commented that it was the sauce that was so good. I said it was the perfectly crisp thin crust. Maybe a combination of all three? Truth is, I don’t really care! Just bring me another slice!

To top it all off we had a lovely dessert. Almost like a deconstructed cannoli: piped ricotta with chocolate bits, and a crunchy granola crumbled over top. What’s not to love. Creamy and decadent.

Melrose isn’t about the gimmicks, or the hype. It is a quality pizzeria with a neighbourhood feel and lovely atmosphere.
Make a reservation now, because soon, this spot won’t just be the new kid on the block…
