Don’t judge a taco by its shell.
30 Westminster Ave N Montreal, QC H4X1Y8
UPDATE: TACOS WESTMINSTER HAS CLOSED
This one’s for any NDG-ers, Cote Saint Luc-ers, or MTLers with a car willing to travel for food. Quick fact- I am always willing to travel for food.
Skeptics, bear with me! When you scroll down to see the exterior of this restaurant you will definitely be underwhelmed. Cute, it is not. Tasty, it is! Taco spots have recently begun popping up around Montreal, but our selection definitely pales in comparison to cities like Toronto, and New York. Who would have thought our very own taco gem would show up in the form of…..well…..this place.
Named after its only menu item, Tacos is not the most original, nor noticeable restaurant on the block. It is located in Westminster village diagonally across from Burger de Ville. With only a couple of stools inside, and one table outside, I strongly recommend you pick-up your order. Unless of course you’re alone and hungry and want to scarf down your tacos then and there (don’t judge…a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.). So you walk up to the counter and order your tacos off of a white-board menu (…not a chalkboard). One negative was the lack of vegetarian options, but it seems like they usually have fish tacos on the menu- perhaps they had run out for the night. Out of the pork, lamb, and beef tacos, I opted for the lamb, and they did not disappoint.
Anyone who knows authentic tacos knows that 1) the tortillas should be small, and 2) there should be two of them, so that they don’t fall apart from all the juicy goodness inside. Out of all the tacos I have tried in Montreal, these were the only ones that met BOTH rules. So let’s just say I was excited when the plate was put down in front of me. I squeezed some lime juice on them, folded one up, and took a bite. These are not for the faint of heart. Get ready for a spicy, messy, and delicious feast. Oh ya. One more thing. THEY HAVE CHURROS! I was in a healthy mood, so decided against ordering those deep-fried, golden, sugar-coated doughnuts (regretting this now), but I will be back for you. I promise.
If you’re a taco aficionado, who doesn’t always need to eat at a fancy resto, or just a girl or guy alone and hungry on a Friday night looking for a quick & yummy bite, this is the place for you!
Reservations: Nope! Just stop by!
Date night: If you’re trying to get rid of him/her…
Attire: Sweatpants.
The damage: $ (on average 3 tacos for $8.00)
