MKT Fresh

2044 Rue Metcalfe, Montréal, QC H3A 1X8

My favourite trip to date was to Greece a couple of summers ago. The white and blue roofs of Santorini, the perfect weather in Mykonos, the warm people of Milos, and most importantly- the market fresh food make sure you never want to leave. I was recently invited to Restaurant MKT in celebration of their 1-year anniversary. Though MKT does not in fact serve traditional Greek food, the décor and fresh ingredients took me back to my favourite summer destination, even though we were smack in the middle of a Montreal winter.

Downtown has not been a hub for gourmet restaurants in the past few years, but as of late, more and more are popping up in the city center. This is great for business lunches, taking clients out, and dinners pre-Habs games!

The décor incorporates a lot of white and blue creating a Mediterranean feel. The servers and owners are warm and welcoming. And the first thing set down on the table was homemade focaccia with cows cheese and olive tapenade. See where I’m drawing the comparison to Greece?

The menu is also quite diverse with seafood, risotto, pastas, and meat options- all with a Mediterranean twist. There is really something for everyone. We started with a light and fresh snow crab and shrimp tower, followed by tender grilled octopus, and lastly an endive, pear, and gorgonzola salad. Next up was the mushroom and truffle gnocchi. These were large and smooth served in a creamy mushroom and truffle sauce. As if we weren’t full enough already, we rounded out the meal with a bouillabaisse filled with clams, calamari, scallops, and shrimp. We paired these dishes with a sweet white Greek wine recommended by one of the owners.

When asked if we were ready for dessert, we ensured the owner that we were too full, but he insisted we try the Baci Gelato made by his wife (how sweet!), and we couldn’t refuse. It was creamy and delicious and the crumbled nuts on top added the perfect crunch.

For those of you seeking a fresh Mediterranean dinner in the downtown core, MKT is your destination! You should stop by and wish them a happy 1st birthday!
